The first major step you need to take before starting on this journey is to look at what you are eating. As I mentioned, the major cause of alcoholism is related to poor diet and nutrition.
In order to change your habits, it is much easier to avoid the temptation then stare it in the face every day. The best way to get started here is to simply look in your kitchen and pantry and see what is there.
You are probably like most people and have a lot of stuff that comes in boxes and bags from major manufacturers and publicly traded companies. The goal of these companies is to make money. They are accountable to their to stockholders and their only purpose is to increase revenue and the stock price. This is accomplished through selling more products while cutting expenses. This is why manufactured foods are so bad for you. They are even worse for the alcoholic because they only serve to perpetuate the problem.
If you’re serious about addressing the problem you’ll take the necessary steps to clean your house of all the items that are making you sick. Instead of trying to define it what you need to remove, I like to put it into categories of foods that you “CAN” eat. Keep in mind, that this list is a goal… The closer you can come to achieving an the user is going to be to stop alcoholism.
What I am outlining to you is a “process”, not an “event”. It is going to take time to learn how to eat correctly because we are going to have to “unlearn” a lot of things.
To keep things simple as we get started, here is an overall list of the things that are OK to eat without going into a lot of details. All these foods need to be fresh, not canned, bottled, or boxed (whenever possible). They are listed in the order of importance.
- Vegetables – green and colorful, low in starch
- Fruit – most fruits are OK, but there are a few that are very high in sugar that should be avoided.
- Nuts and seeds
- Whole grains
- Starchy vegetables
- Limited Amounts of Fish, Eggs, Nonfat Dairy, Poulty and Meat
Anything not on the above list needs to be removed from your diet in order to ensure you have the best chance of success. The best way to get these out with you r diet, is to get them out your house. Here is a summary of the FOODS you need to AVOID:
- White bread
- High fat dairy
- Processed meats
- Processed food
All these foods are not only unhealthy, they convert to sugar in the bloodstream extremely quickly. This is a major problem for alcoholics in the primary reason for relapse.
Seems a bit overwhelming doesn’t at? It was for me! However, the alternative was to live a life of constant cravings and other various problems both physical and mental.
The overall goal is to stabilize blood sugar levels. The way to accomplish this is by choosing a diet high in foods that are as nature intended. Obviously, this is very difficult to do perfectly. So, just do your best to start making the adjustments.
To make things a little easier, you can designate a time once a week to cheat on your diet – this is totally optional, but at least it gives you a reason to have a treat every now and then.
